This Airbnb shipping container home is located on 27 acres of land known as “Desert Rose Ranch” on the Texas Wine Route between Fredericksburg and Austin. It has its own bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, and perhaps my favorite part is the roof terrace with patio furniture, jacuzzi and even a hammock! Designed and built by Bob’s Containers, it’s hard to imagine this idyllic country home was ever a 40′ x 8′ shipping container.
The container house follows Bob’s Containers “mower model” using a standard 40-foot shipping container and starts at $149,250. The makeover for this particular Airbnb was to add a wide garage-style door at the front to let in plenty of natural light, and a fully furnished home with all the bells and whistles. However, the highlight of the residence is its terrace, which can be accessed via a side spiral staircase. Climb to the top, where there’s outdoor furniture, a grill, a cowboy hot tub, and a hammock hanging off one side for the perfect getaway. The cottage is located on a large clearing with untouched nature from all sides. There is even a fireplace in the yard for chilly evenings or days when you want morels for dinner.
A 40 x 8 foot patio can be the highlight of a home experience. This gives you a place to watch the sunrise and sunset, and even relax in the Jacuzzi on winter evenings. The hammock extends from the side and can accommodate 2 people (although it will be cramped).
While it’s natural to wonder if an 8-foot-wide house is really enough, this “little container in the woods” is perfect for two people and maybe a child or pet. At one end of the container is a bedroom that can comfortably accommodate a double bed, with a large window on one side that overlooks the expanse of private property. Walk down the wooden-floored hallway to the other side, where there is a kitchenette for cooking, cleaning, and cooking (alternatively, the patio grill lets you quickly cook burgers and steaks). There is a bathroom next to the kitchenette and although it is quite large it even has a walk in shower in case the rooftop bath cannot be used.
Airbnb homes are available for booking, and if you’re interested in building your own home out of shipping containers, check out Bob’s Containers for a quote.
