The first focus is COVID-19 variants. The second web page includes the COVID-19 breakthrough data report, which shows COVID-19 breakthrough cases, hospitalizations, and in-depth data over time.
A vaccine breakthrough case is defined as a situation where an individual tests positive for COVID-19 after being fully vaccinated.
Breakthrough data shows that as of September 20, the New York State Department of Health was informed that there were 78,416 laboratory-confirmed breakthrough cases of COVID-19 among the fully vaccinated population in New York State, which is equivalent to 0.7% of fully vaccinated 12-year-olds or People above.
In addition, 5,555 of the fully vaccinated people in New York State were hospitalized due to COVID, which is equivalent to 0.05% of the fully vaccinated population 12 years of age or older.
The website stated: “These results indicate that laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 hospitalizations are not common in fully vaccinated people.”
In the week of May 3, 2021, the estimated vaccine effectiveness shows that a fully vaccinated New Yorker has a 91.8% lower chance of becoming a COVID-19 case compared to an unvaccinated New Yorker.
With the emergence of new variants, the effectiveness dropped to mid-July. However, officials said the rate of decline has slowed. By the week of August 23, 2021, compared with unvaccinated New Yorkers, vaccinated New Yorkers have a 77.3% lower chance of becoming a COVID-19 case.
In the weeks from May 3 to August 23, fully vaccinated New Yorkers are 89.5% to 95.2% less likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated New Yorkers.
Officials said that the continued 89% hospitalization effectiveness is consistent with the results of the original vaccine clinical trial, which shows that serious COVID-19 disease can be prevented at these levels.
