The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L features several improvements to optimize ride, handling and quiet sound, while also reducing weight and improving fuel economy.New unibody design with three available 4×4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II), available Quadra-Lift air suspension and standard Selec-Terrain traction management system has been greatly improved Cherokee’s legendary 4×4 ability.
Use lightweight, high-strength aluminum covers, including the hood and tailgate, to help reduce weight and improve fuel economy. The Jeep engineering team reduced weight by mounting the axle directly to the engine along with a solid aluminum front mount, aluminum engine mounts and steering, magnesium crossmembers, aluminum shock towers and an all-new electronic primary brake boost system. To help meet weight, impact and durability, the Grand Cherokee L body structure utilizes the latest grades of Gen 3 steel.Next-generation steel enables engineering and design teams to cold stamp complex parts from higher-strength materials that were not possible in the past, creating stronger and innovative body structures.
Jeep engineers placed great emphasis on designing a body structure that was strong yet light, balanced and functional. To achieve this, Grand Cherokee L is composed of more than 60% advanced high-strength steel that helps improve ductility, usability and energy absorption.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is widely known for its outstanding on-road dynamics and quietness, thanks in part to its front and rear independent suspension. For 2021, the Grand Cherokee L features a newly positioned front virtual ball joint for improved lateral control and a multi-link rear suspension for improved ride comfort and everyday handling.A reinforced engine case with anti-vibration towers increases local lateral stiffness by 125 percent. The new variable ratio air spring suspension continuously adjusts stiffness according to load conditions to further complement the vehicle’s legendary off-road capability. There are approximately 6,500 welds on the body alone, enhancing the high-class etiquette.
The Grand Cherokee L’s air suspension system features several enhancements to provide a smooth, comfortable ride on and off-road:
For the first time in a Grand Cherokee, the front axle is bolted directly to the engine for better management of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and superior driving dynamics, thanks in part to its lower center of gravity.New active/electronic engine mounts absorb more vibration and movement at idle, but stiffen at higher speeds to optimise coasting. This is a new feature on the Grand Cherokee that offers a whole new level of comfort, versatility and performance.Enhanced Active Noise Cancellation and dual-dash bodywork, door weatherstrips and acoustic glass complete the enhancements that reduce NVH and wind noise to a whisper.
The Grand Cherokee’s Electric Power Steering (EPS) system is carefully calibrated to provide a superior driving feel and reduce energy consumption. The electric motor works with an adaptive engine control unit (ECU) to monitor steering speed, steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This allows different levels of steering assistance to be applied, for example, when more steering assistance is required at low speeds, such as through parking lots, or less at highway speeds, to enhance overall driver confidence. The EPS system uses a variable ratio to improve maneuverability while maintaining center stability in all driving conditions.
The all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers buyers a choice of two powerful, fuel-efficient and refined engines that deliver proven performance in any driving situation.
Standard is an all-aluminum 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 rated at 293 hp and 260 lb-ft.of torque. The 60-degree angle between the Pentastar V-6 cylinder banks is prized for its power and refinement, making it smooth running and enhanced by attachments that attach directly to the engine block.A seven-time Wards 10 winner for Best Engine and Propulsion System, the Pentastar V-6 engine is compact and features features such as an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head.
The chain-driven DOHC includes two-stage variable valve lift and variable valve timing (VVT).This combination quickly adjusts engine output to the driver’s needs to achieve the best balance of performance and fuel economy.
Fuel-Efficient Engine Start-Stop (ESS) technology is standard on the Pentastar V-6.The ESS system has been upgraded and improved for the Grand Cherokee L.Changes include a pressure-reserve element in the eight-speed gearbox, which supplies shift elements with dedicated transmission fluid for quick starts when the engine restarts.Refined powertrain control and new starter technology minimize early engine restarts caused by slight movements of the driver’s foot on the brake pedal.Restart noise, vibration and harshness are reduced with improved controls and switchable engine mounts.
The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is rated to tow up to 6,200 pounds and has a projected range of nearly 500 miles.
A VVT with dual independent cam phasing enables better fuel efficiency across the Pentastar V-6′s wide torque range. In the rev range from 1,800 to 6,400 rpm, nearly 90 percent of the engine’s peak torque is available – an important consideration when towing or towing.
Buyers wanting more power can opt for the award-winning 5.7-liter V-8 rated at 357 hp and 390 lb-ft.Torque delivered over a wide power range.
Based on a cast iron block and aluminum cylinder head, the V-8 delivers performance and efficiency through VVT and fuel-saving technology (cylinder deactivation). With fuel-saving technology, the engine control computer shuts off fuel and spark and closes the valves of the engine’s four cylinders during light-load operation that does not require full power, such as highway cruising. When the driver depresses the accelerator pedal, the system immediately restarts deactivated cylinders.
The Grand Cherokee L’s V-8 engine features cylinder deactivation technology that shuts down four cylinders during light acceleration or cruising on the highway.Compared to previous generations, the system works in extended areas where the driver won’t notice. It provides V-8 power for acceleration and heavy loads, as well as four-cylinder operation, when torque requirements are less than the four-cylinder’s maximum available torque.Depending on the driving situation, cylinder deactivation can improve fuel economy from 5% to 20%.
Fuel economy is further improved by VVT technology, which reduces the pumping work of the engine by closing the intake valve later and increasing the expansion process of the combustion event. This allows more energy to be transferred to the wheels instead of being lost as heat from the exhaust.VVT also improves engine breathing, which increases engine efficiency and power.
Each engine is mated to a durable, rugged TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission for improved fuel economy and crisp, smooth shifting.A wide range of gear ratios helps keep engine revs within the ideal range for the task – whether cruising the highway or exploring off-road routes.Dynamic shift map changes enable the transmission to quickly adjust its shift strategy to match the driver’s needs based on inputs such as engine torque changes, grade detection, temperature, and longitudinal and lateral acceleration.
New to the 2021 Grand Cherokee L 4×4 is the front axle disconnect. If the vehicle senses that road conditions do not require all-wheel drive, a front axle disconnect automatically places the Grand Cherokee L in two-wheel drive, reducing driveline drag and improving fuel economy. When the vehicle senses the need for four-wheel drive, it automatically re-engages.
Appearance From the moment Jeep introduced the Grand Cherokee in 1992, it showed the world something it had never seen before. This most famous SUV set a new industry benchmark and quickly became synonymous with premium design and uncompromising capability.Fast forward decades later, and the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L continues to build on its proud heritage while raising the bar for luxury and performance.
